Executive Committee

Katherine Bates became interested in pediatric cardiology as a medical student at the University of Michigan and then stayed at Michigan for her pediatrics residency. After a chief resident year, she completed a pediatric cardiology fellowship at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. During her clinical fellowship, she became interested in developing her interest in quality and safety into an academic career, and decided to complete the Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Safety fellowship at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. During that fellowship, she earned a Master of Science in Health Policy Research as well as the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s Improvement Advisor program. Katie then returned to the University of Michigan as a cardiology faculty member, and now practices exclusively on the acute care ward. She currently serves at the Associate Chief Clinical Officer for Quality of the C.S. Mott Children’s and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital at the University of Michigan, and leads collaborative QI work for NPC-QIC and PACwithin the Congenital Heart Center. Her research interests focus on improvement methodology and evaluation, including work with the AHRQ’s Pediatric Quality Measure Program.
